Formal Dialogues
Our study days are often paired with the SMA's Formal Dialogues series, which brings together leading theorists of musical form in panel discussions. These events help foster connections between scholars of musical form at various stages in their careers, and allow for informal discussions of prominent topics in current theoretical discourse, with a focus on complex or underrepresented works.
Formal Dialogues V featured Sarah Moynihan, Kelvin Lee, Julian Horton, Christopher Tarrant, Benedict Taylor, and Steven Vande Moortele discussing the first movement of Sibelius's Sixth Symphony.

Formal Dialogues IV featured Julian Horton, Anne Hyland, Janet Schmalfeldt, Christopher Tarrant, and Steven Vande Moortele discussing the first movement of Bruckner's Symphony no. 8.
Formal Dialogues III explored a collaborative approach to Gade's Piano Sonata op. 28, featuring Peter Smith, Julian Horton, Anne Hyland, Steven Vande Moortele, and Benedict Taylor.

Formal Dialogues II centred on sonata typologies and micro-theories of nineteenth-century form with case studies from Onslow and Mayseder, featuring Anne Hyland, Sarah Moynihan, Julian Horton, Benedict Taylor, and Steven Vande Moortele.
